Should you start having contractions right after your water breaks? Or does it take awhile?

It depends on the woman. I know several who had contractions before their water broke. I know several (including me) who had to have their water broken, but had contractions. I know some whose water broke and then contractions started. And I know some whose water broke and they had to be induced because contractions never started.

Started right away but they were not "oh my God this is PAINFUL!" until about 2 hours after my water broke.

Mine broke in a leak, contractions started within a couple hours, but definitely were not strong. I would not have been admitted for quite some time if it had only been the contractions. Ultimately, they gave me pitocin because things weren’t going fast enough, and they want baby out with 24 hours after water breaks.

It can be different for everyone. When my water broke, I went to the hospital and had no contractions for two hours. They were just starting to talk about giving me pitocin when the contraction started fast and hard. Baby was born 5 hours later.
