Is Tv time bad for a 5 month old?

My son is 5 months old and really like to watch the tv. We put on kids shows to keep him entertained but is it bad? And how much is too much? They are mostly nursery rhymes. He loves to coo and even laugh at the tv

The only time I do it is when he’s really fussy and needs something to focus on so he’ll let me hold him and not have him be so busy. He’s 8 months. We don’t have cable but I’ll find one movie on Netflix to have on standby and it usually takes us 3-4 days to get through it...and even then he’s really not paying attention. Do some research and make the decision for yourself. I’m personally iffy about it from my child development classes but I don’t personally know anyone that completely limits their child’s tv time drastically.

My mother in law is so upset with me for doing cartoons with my LO, my mom is like aww that’s cute! Everyone is different about it. 
I researched it after my mil nearly cried when I told her I’d started doing cuddle and cartoons before naps to help him wind down. I felt awful. But I found that most research says if they’re under 2 and get more than an hour or two a day it can hinder social development and language acquisition. Mostly I think it only has a negative impact on little ones that are left daily for lengthy periods with only a TV while moms clean, cook, tend to siblings, or lounge/rest.
It really helps him chill and settle before naps to watch TV for 10-30 min. I’m always with him though and we talk a bit and cuddle loads!
We watch some of the nick jr shows that he seems to really connect with. Mickey Mouse and Paw Patrol and such. Way different from the old cartoons back in our day! They’re so oriented towards shapes and colors and learning, I think they’re great! (It still irks me every time my mil cringes and judges me though, she needs to trust my judgement!!)

Do what you gotta do. My little girl watches TV. Mostly because it's just on. She never sits and watches it. Just crawls around and looks at it occasionally.

There’s going to be a lot of comments on here but honestly you’re the parent. You should just choose to do what you feel most comfortable with or talk to your babies doctor to see what she thinks in relation to your babies development. 😊
