Were you able to breastfeed?

Question

Those of you who tried breastfeeding, did it work for you? I want to breastfeed, but I’ve heard more stories than enough about women who wanted to and just couldn’t.  It seems more common to be unable to breastfeed than to be able to breastfeed from the accounts that I’ve heard.

The first month or two can be very challenging and I think a lot of women decide it’s not worth it. There are of course cases where it just truly doesn’t work, but I think more often it’s that women don’t realize there is a huge learning curve for both mom and baby and think it’s just suppose to come naturally. So when they are facing challenges they assume something is wrong, that it will be that hard forever, and they give up.

From what I've found from talking to other mom's those who say they couldn't often times just got told bad information and didn't have the support they needed to be successful. That or they didn't want to, but are afraid of being shamed so they lie and say they couldn't.

Here around 95%are able to breastfeed the three first months, so I think it really really depends on the knowledge and willingness at the hospital to teach and help the breastfeeding in the beginning. And of course the support around the mother and baby. 
I’m guessing the total lack of free samples, and/or advertisements for formula as something to do with it, and the fact that we have 49+weeks of payed maternity leave.

It's A LOT of work and not all babies get it right away. The hospitals start pushing formula on you just hours after giving birth if your baby isn't latching, when in reality lots of babies won't feed for the first day and that's perfectly fine. I had a lot of problems breastfeeding and tongue/lip ties to deal with. Unfortunately the training to become a lactation consultant is very brief and so there are a lot of consultants who aren't very good at what they do. With how hard it can be and bad advice I think a lot of moms give up too early. I saw 5 before I finally found someone who got us on the right track and she told me that she had only ever had one mom who could not breastfeed (had a breast reduction). If you want to breastfeed, I'm sure you'll find a way.
**NOT saying that giving up is a bad thing. Sometimes it's better for everyone's sanity.

if your a ftm it can be difficult for you and baby to learn to breath feed. for my first child I didn't because I thought it was going to be uncomfortable, with my second I breast feed her for about 2 weeks and I plan on doing the same with the baby I'm currently pregnant with now (33 weeks). it can take time to learn, but in positive the people at the hospital will show you. its very easy to learn. best advice I can give you thou, make sure the baby latches before he/she starts crying, once the baby starts crying because she/he is hungry it's very difficult to get em to latch.

I couldn’t produce enough to exclusively breastfeed so I supplement formula between feeds. A lot of women get discouraged by that so they stop breastfeeding altogether. I’ve been going strong four months now. Sometimes it’s overwhelming but it’s usually fine for me
