It depends on what the reason for their bad time is. My ex has depression so I had to handle it carefully. At least do it in person to allow you to comfort them better.

In my case I broke up woth him then offered to remain friends although I was just being selfish and hurting him more that way smh

You don’t want anyone harming themselves but you also don’t need to stay with someone you don’t want to be with.. you can just chill out for the next month then maybe say let’s be friends and slowly back away in the coming weeks. Don’t feel obligated to stay with someone ever please 😊
