The Eagle has Landed

Chris

After several days of no contractions, my wife's water finally broke and we rushed off to the hospital a few minutes later. The hospital is about 30 min away, but that was apparently too long for the baby boy to wait. My wife couldn't help but start pushing before we were there! I parked in the circle drive just outside the front door and ran in and yelled that I was delivering a baby in my car, and the hospital staff just looked at me blankly. Not sure what else to say, I ran back out to my wife screaming in the passenger seat of my 4Runner and soon I saw the baby's head start to emerge. One more push, and a river of blood, and I suddenly had my son in my arms! I immediately noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck! Luckily, Autopilot Dad carefully unwrapped it and set the baby up on his Mom's chest before Regular Dad could freak out about it. About a minute or two after this (honestly, I really had no sense of time when this whole thing was occurring), about 10 doctors and nurses descended on my car. The OB quickly confirmed the baby was breathing, at which point I sighed the biggest sigh of relief to have ever been sighed. After the doc cut the cord and wrapped up the baby, my wife climbed out of the car with a pair of forceps still hanging on the umbilical between her legs and got onto a gurney. A healthy baby boy and his mother were wheeled into the hospital while I was told to park the car and clean up the miracle left in my passenger seat. I pity the soul who yells "shotgun!" when getting into my truck... But, perhaps I'm one step closer to being an actual doctor instead of just a spaceship doctor. Welcome to the world Apollo -- our first lesson will be about patience :)
