Closed Captions

Tayste

How do you guys feel about movie theaters having subtitles on screen for those who are hearing impaired?

Personally, I hate subtitles. But, I wouldn’t be against them in theaters because it would help others a lot more than it would hurt me.

At the theater I work at, we offer a device that goes in the cup holder, with a long neck that’s adjustable and it has a small screen that has subtitles. It syncs to the theater when they walk in, so all they have to do is turn it on. Customers have complained saying its discrimination that they have to ask for a closed caption device when they need it, they believe the subtitles should be on screen.

The only issues we’ve had with the devices is that when customers return them, employees sometimes don’t plug them in. (This has been a big deal to my boss so that problem has since come to an end; but it was an issue in the beginning). Beyond that, we’ve never had a problem with them.

What do you think? Should subtitles be on screen or offered to only those who need them?

**is subtitle and close captions are not interchangeable terms then that’s my bad and I’m sorry**
