They use the needle to insert the catheter, once both are in place they remove the needle leaving behind a thin flexible piece of plastic aka catheter, I find it weird some people are saying they leave the needle in place :/ they don’t here in BC Can as far as I’ve ever gotten one

if you are referring to an IV for fluids than a catheter is put in with the needle and the needle in removed, same as any other IV.

I just learned the other day that the needle comes out with an IV! I felt so dumb.

The needle goes in to set where the little flexible tube needs to be, then the needle comes out, leaving the tube behind. Google images of IV insertion.
