When is it ok to let your new bf / gf know you have kids

That’s probably something they should know like right away in my opinion.

That is something someone should know right away. 
What if that person doesn’t want kids or isn’t ready for kids yet...? Would you rather they leave right away, or after you’ve grown to like them more after dating for a bit?

For a lot of people children may well be a deal breaker so you should be upfront from the start. I recall when my ex husband and I split my friend set me up on a date a few months afterwards.. he was a real nice guy, made me laugh, was polite, interesting conversation. 
We got along really well - right up to the point I asked whether he had children, there was an instant change in his body language. He replied that he didn't have children and felt that he couldn't see the point in having children, the world being the way it is etc etc (fair enough..) .. he also said he found children really difficult to be around, didn't like the responsibility. 
For me this was definitely a deal breaker as I had 5 children (though 2 were adults already) so I made my excuses shortly afterwards and left.
Everything else about this guy seemed like we should fit perfectly... did me a favour because I now have my wonderful husband :)
