Bad parenting or not?

My friend shared this persons story on Facebook. Saw people blaming the washing machine for this accident. How the washing machine is evil for being front loading and how it’s a horrible invention. What do you think the parents could have done to prevent this? I’m curious if they have monitors in their kids rooms so that they can hear them?

I personally would have had a locking door on my basement that requires a key to open it,now that I have seen this story,and monitors in my kids rooms so I could hear them wake up. I live in an apartment so it’s easy for me to keep my troublesome tot out of trouble for the most part. Worsts thing he can do here is fish in the toilet. He can’t open my laundry room door.it also is behind two doors. Since I I don’t live in a house yet I’m curious what moms who live in a house would do to prevent such a thing with small kids in the house?

I do think that in some ways the parents were irresponsible.
