Breast pump: manual or electric?

So I will be a SAHM and plan to breastfeed. I signed up to get a Breast pump through insurance but they can’t even tell me if I qualify until end of August (due in October). I want to pump at least some so my husband can feed her and we can take bottles on the go (I have no problem with breastfeeding in public, I just personally don’t feel I would be comfortable doing it, even with a cover depending on the location). If we don’t qualify for an electric pump with insurance, would it be better to buy an electric or manual? I had the thought that since I’ll be home all the time and I honestly shouldn’t have to pump too much, that manual might be better but I’m a FTM so I have no clue. Any advice is appreciated!

All insurances are required to supply you with a breast pump under the new healthcare laws. 
Manual is far too much work. Get an electric.

I actually recommend getting both if you can. The electric pump is amazing, especially when you’re doing it all the time. But the manual pump is great for quick relief of engorgement without having to deal with a million parts. Also great to throw in your bag and take anywhere for pumping while out. And when you’re pump parts are dirty at 5am, manual to the rescue! Someone told me to get both and I’m so happy I did. At first I thought it was silly to have both.

I had hard time with my insurance and pump suppliers when I was trying to order my pump. The supplier wanted to charge me extra for an “upgrade” charge. I ended up calling my insurance company back and they told me the pump I wanted should be covered in full. Long story short, I ended up getting the insurance company to call the supplier and tell them the pump I wanted should be covered in full and I didn’t have much trouble out of them after that, I just had to call and get the ball moving a couple of times. I ended up with the Spectra S2 and I am happy with it. It can be a double electric or a single electric. I am pretty much exclusively pumping. I also have a cheap Lanonish manual pump that I take with me on the go. Good luck!!

I’m also a SAHM and I have the Ameda Finess electric double pump. I got it at no cost through insurance. I started pumping some at 1-2 weeks to help with the engorgement when my milk came in. I tapered off for a while and now I try to pump one side at each feeding to build up a stash. I mainly nurse but it is so helpful to have several feedings in the freezer for an outing or if I need a little break and my husband can feed!

You’ll qualify. Some insurances just have a policy that they require you to wait until a moth before or after your due date. I’d still pick up a manual pump for the car or emergencies.

Electric double! Manual takes a long time and you can only do one side at a time. Save yourself the headache. I have Medela Pump in style which worked decently but have heard really good things about the spectra as well.

get an electric and don't worry about getting approved in August and being due in October,  you can't safely start pumping until 37 weeks. Good luck!

I have both electric (Medela pump in style) and manual (Lansinoh). I've found that I prefer the manual pump--it's so easy to use and clean and it seems to get a little more milk out of me than the electric one. When I use it, I put a haaka on the other side to help speed up the process of emptying both breasts. The Lansinoh manual pump was about $18 on Amazon I think.
