They gave me an episiotomy the first time. He gave me a local (shot to numb), then made a small incision where I would otherwise have torn. It’s nowhere near as painful (I tore with a subsequent baby). 
All in all, relax & don’t worry too much. Labor & all of the things that go with are painful & tiring, but when it’s over, it’s just OVER and all of your focus goes to that beautiful miracle. Makes every second worth it.

Horrendous!! 3rd degree, they thought it was fourth but luckily it wasn’t that far 🙄  took ages to heal, hurt to sit and walk, hurt like hell. Having a c section this time.

My midwife made sure I didn’t tear. She slowly stretched my skin and guided baby out. Baby had arm at head level she slid her arm back in before having me push again. She also encouraged me to use baby oil to heels my skin get ready to stretch. 
I really really believe drs can make it so you don’t tear. My moms drs ripped us all out and she had 4th degree. With her last they just cut her. 🤷🏻‍♀️ same with a friend! Baby starts coming and they tell you to push push push instead of easing baby so your skin can stretch.

I had a first degree tear on the inside. I only pushed 3 times for maybe 2 mins, (no epidural) and I did it as hard and fast as I could, ignoring the burning, tearing feeling. It was healed in just under a week.

had second degree tear that required several stitches which dissolved completely by 5-6 weeks after delivery.

I had 3rd degree tears.  I had an epidural so I didn’t really feel a thing.  They stitched me up and it took some time to recover.  They sent me home with a pain relief spray.  Honestly them pushing on your stomach after giving birth is worse than the birth itself 🤷🏻‍♀️  but it’s all worth it.  I’m pregnant again with number 2.  You will be fine.  If it was that bad people wouldn’t get pregnant again. 😂
