Why would they do DNA testing for an STD test?

Is that normal? My health care plan won’t pay for my std test because it’s showing up as experimental work not medical.

That doesn’t sound right. STD testing is usually routine at check ups if something is off. And why would they do a DNA test?

Most common tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomonas are actually DNA tests! They essentially test for the presence of the DNA of those particular bacteria, which is much faster and more sensitive than trying to actually grow them in a culture. It is the standard way that these things get tested though so it is weird that your insurance won’t cover it?
