Apartment lost our money order 🙄

I’m so annoyed right now. We have been having some bad luck financially and today definitely feels like a Monday.

So rent was due on the 1st this month and we have 5 days to turn it in before we get charged a late fee of $50. My boyfriend didn’t get paid until the 3rd, which is a Friday. So by the time he gets off and gets his check cashed the apartments leasing office is closed. We grabbed a money order from the gas station next door, which was printed out into 2 separate money orders. One was for $500 and the other for $75. I fill them both out and stick them both inside the deposit box at the leasing office. I really wish I had put them both in an envelope together but we don’t have any.

So this was done on Friday the 3rd. I know the office is open on Saturday the 4th until noon. I was expecting the employee working that day to have checked the deposit box and updated our rent balance on their website, but when I checked later that day we still had a past due balance. I had to wait until today, Monday the 6th, in order to get a response from someone in their office. I sent an email asking to confirm our rent had been received. I soon received a reply stating that they only received one money order for $75 and since that was not the full rent amount they would have to return it to us along with a 5 day notice. I assured them that I had turned in 2 separate money orders since that is how they were given to me, and that I was positive they were both turned in together. They agreed to waive our late fee as long as I showed them the receipt proving I purchased a money order for $500. I went by the office and they made photo copies of my receipts.

What really truly annoys me is that I had to check the status of my money order to make sure it had not yet been cashed. It wasn’t cashed yet so I was able to order a replacement. It costs an $18 processing fee just to replace it. $45 if you want it within 3 days. They take the amount of out the replacement money order so we are going to have to go buy a whole separate money order for $18, which costs almost $2, just so we have the full amount of $500 to give to our apartment, WHO LOST THE MONEY ORDER TO BEGIN WITH.

Should I be responsible for the lost money order or should they? I feel like it’s partially my fault for thinking that sticking 2 naked money orders in a box and expecting them to get to the recipient safely would be a good idea. But I was worried if we didn’t get it turned in asap we would be charged a late fee. But at the same time I KNOW I had put them BOTH in there. If they got one they should have gotten both. They had a whole stack of them that he said we went through multiple times. There had to be a mistake on their end and it will truly drive me insane to not know what happened to our damn rent. And I wish they could compensate us for the extra $18 we are going to have to pay them! Such bull!
