when to go to hospital

Question

i’m attempting my first vbac... my first son was born 25 weeks 6 days emergency c-section from placental abruption from a fall. so i have no idea what i’m in for... the hospital is 1 1/2 hours away and i want to make sure i can get there on time. do i wait until i feel contractions? water breaks? i have no idea! thanks all! i’m 30 weeks 2 days today and have been having those braxton hix contractions the past week

My OB said as soon as I'm in labour attempting a VBAC that I need to go to the hospital right away. Baby needs to be monitored because of the risk of uterine rupture and baby would show signs of distress right away if it haooened and if they catch it in time they can still save baby and you and your uterus! But if it goes undetected it can be much much worse. So go as soon as you have regular/strong contractions or if you think you might be in labour. Or right away definetly if you water breaks. You can also can the maternity ward ahead of time and ask their advice on when to come in, just make sure they know this is a first VBAC attempt as well so they know that you must be there monitors early on in labour.

There’s really no indication that you’ll have a quick birth based on either of those things. However, the risk of infection for baby increases when your water breaks. I would definitely go if that happens. If you’re going based on contractions, I wouldn’t wait long. With your hospital being so far, I wouldn’t take any chances. Things can always change at the drop of a hat with baby.

Did you have a classic c section being so early? I had one at 23 weeks and had to have a classical incision and now they don't even entertain the idea of a vbac for me.  :-(
