Can a narcissist ever change?

My husband is one, and I wish he would, but I think it’s highly unlikely. Any experiences?

Can I ask why you’re still with him if you know he’s a narcissist and have no faith in him ever changing?

Yes they can, Narcissistic personality disorder is a legit disorder that can be treated through talk therapy among other therapies as well. A lot of the time personality disorders develop due to childhood trauma. I am actually working through things with someone who has it due to the lack of emotional support and unhealthy parenting from both of his parents especially his mother. The tricky part is that they have to realize they have a problem and they have to want to fix it.

If it’s NPD it’s unlikely.  It can take years of therapy and sometimes they actually end up learning new tricks and techniques to manipulate with by watching and mirroring the therapist.  Therapy for everyone involved with the narcissist can be really very helpful though.

My Mom has a personality disorder, is very narcissistic, and plays to constantly being a victim. I’m in therapy now and can say that I’m working on accepting that she will not change and I cannot control that. Good luck to you. It is very difficult having a narcissistic person in your life.

Only if they wanted to. The change would have to come from the narcissistic person.

Narcissism is a personality disorder. So yes, people can go to therapy and learn how to self reflect, manage their thoughts and behaviours. 
But they have to put in the effort to do so.

With years of therapy and constant work on his part it’s possible. But he would have to want to change and do the work. It wouldn’t happen overnight

My mother has NPD and I carry a lot of my own issues as a result of being a daughter of a narcissist. I have seen empathy from her before so I know it's possible but I avoid her more often than not and try not to hold onto anything.

I said unsure. I think they can only change if they actually want to. People have NPD, and they can suffer from it and not even know. With proper help they might be able to change. However, I think it’s something they will always suffer with. Even if they are getting help. So they might “stop” being a narcissist, but never really stop.

My mom spent over 10 years with my stepdad who was that way. Promised he would change and he never did. She finally had enough and left. To be honest as much as she loved him once she left him she started taking care of herself and her needs.
