Baby furniture vs Adult furniture

My husband and I are looking at furniture for the future nursery. While we know we have to buy the usual kids stuff we are curious if there is a quality difference between children’s furniture, in particular dressers vs adult furniture? Our plan is to buy a high quality solid wood dresser for our son or daughter so they can one day take it with them after they graduate college and move out.

We like some dressers at Crate and Barrel, and I am a fan of their wood products, but they recently released a kids line of furniture (the stars aligned in my favor) but I don’t see any in their show room. Also I am concerned if we can attach a changing table top to a non child furniture piece. If we have to drill in the back so be it, but I am wondering about the logistics of it.

Back to kids furniture, it looks more veneer and painted and prone to chipping, anyone can confirm this? Also, do you regret spending money on these pieces?
