Coats for winter baby?

Question

My son will be born in November, but not out of hospital until mid December. We live in the North of the UK, so the temperature will range from 3 - 7 degrees celsius. Can anyone advice me on how many coats to buy for him and should I get coats of varying thickness? Or just a medium coat and we can add layers underneath when it's colder? Also should I buy two of each size / thickness in case of messes? Thanks :)

M&S do some lovely thick knitted jackets you layer up and cover with a blanket.. I’m due in Nov to, both my boys was born in Oct & Feb so winter babies, I always brought thick jackets and a snowsuit for really cold days. Just remember you have to remove babies jacket or coat when they strapped in car seat so easier to use more layers then big thick coats if you do a lot of driving.. 👍🏻

It is a challenge to get a coat on a tiny baby and they can’t be in the car seat with it so its just a hassle. If you’re going in the car seat I’d just dress them warmly in fleece, booties, hat, etc and use a warm blanket or car seat winter cover. If not going in the car seat then get a fleece bunting suit to put over their clothes and use a Blanket.

Layers and blankets; our newborn born in December never wore an actual coat. Like another poster said, you can’t put them in the car seat in a heavy coat, so he just wore regular clothes with warm blankets on top.

Big puffy coats are not allowed under the car seat straps because it’s dangerous. But if you’re going to be putting him in a stroller for walks then you might want a big winter coat/suit of some kind. 
Are you going to have an infant car seat (I think they call it a capsule in the UK?) or a convertible car seat?
If you have the infant car seat then I’d just get one coat that isn’t too big/puffy, then put blankets on top of baby after baby is buckled in. We also had a shower cap style winter cover for the car seat that had a little face flap you could keep open (and close it only for the few seconds you’re outside so the CO2 doesn’t build up).

Get a snowsuit /pramsuit. They have loads in matalan, Asda and mothercare.
