UTI? Hormones? Birth Control? All of the above?
Ok, so I’m in kind of a weird situation and I just want to know if anyone knows what I’m talking about. First, some background: I had my first UTI when I was 18 (did not have sex beforehand but had been sexually active since age 17), and cured it quickly with antibiotics. No further issues. But in November of last year when I was 19, I got another one while away at college (again, not caused by sex) so I went to Northwestern’s urgent care where they diagnosed it and gave me Bactrim. They said they would test the sample to make sure the antibiotic would work, and if the infection was antibiotic resistant, they would call me. Well they didn’t call and it was antibiotic resistant. Long story short, the infection kept spreading for a week despite the antibiotics (not to mention Bactrim itself had horrific side effects for me) and soon the infection had nearly spread to my kidneys. I went back to my hometown where I was hospitalized for a day (this is when they discovered the infection was resistant to Bactrim) and treated with Cipro when I went home, which worked and thankfully without any side effects like Bactrim had given me. Now, onto my actual question. Right before that second uti came on, I felt a weird tingling. It wasn’t painful or irritating, and in my case was almost identical to the feeling of being slightly aroused except that I wasn’t and it would last for hours at a time and for multiple days. Since I have a history with utis, when I get this feeling for long periods of time now I tend to assume I have a uti and have at times been given antibiotics without my urine actually being tested. That was the case this past week, and I just finished a round of antibiotics but I still feel this persistent tingling and I have no idea why. I don’t have any other symptoms, like constantly needing to pee, pain or burning, but the tingling doesn’t go away. I recently (almost 3 months ago) went off birth control because while on birth control I had absolutely no sex drive and I’d prefer to use other contraceptives, so maybe the tingling is just a hormonal imbalance post birth control? But I’ve also read that when utis aren’t cured right away they can be nearly impossible to completely get ride of (in terms of recurring infections from the same first infection), so I worry that my terrible infection from November could still be affecting me? Also read that drinking lots of water to help them is not actually a perfect solution because being very hydrated can just dilute urine and make it appear more normal on a dipstick test when an infection still remains. This worried me because I tried to drink lots of water during and following my bad infection, so maybe it persisted but showed as being cured on tests? This feeling is too persistent to be normal arousal and it doesn’t go away by masturbating (side note: very bad idea to masturbate with a uti which I accidentally did when I thought my first uti was gone and it wasn’t), so I’m at a loss. It’s not that I’m in pain and it’s really not all that extreme, but you try getting some sleep or working normally when you’re hyper aware of your clitoris for hours at a time... It’s very weird. Can anyone relate?
