Does school detention actually do any good?

Detention is not a logical consequence for most behaviors.  As such, it’s not likely to change behavior and the student will repeat the behavior.  In school suspension is also problematic, any time a student isn’t in a classroom, we are limiting their access to learning and we are making it harder for them to be successful which increases the likelihood of even more negative behavior.
In my experience, many maladaptive behaviors stem from a lack of relationship and trust for the teacher in the room or the school system.  A focus on relationship building, strong instructional planning that differentiates to meet student need, and a restorative practices model of school behavior support systems is much more effective.

I think it all just depends on the child as to what form of discipline/punishment works or doesn’t work.  When I was at school if you misbehaved the first time your name would be written on “the red board”, literally they’d just write your name on a piece of paper that was in a red folder and that was like the worst thing ever to me I refused to ever do anything that could get my name on there 😅 I didn’t have strict parents so it wasn’t like there’d be terrible consequences at home, I just didn’t ever want to be “in trouble”.  Then there were kids where no form of discipline made a difference, red board/report cards/detention/suspension - nothing would deter them from breaking the rules.  
Nobody likes having privileges taking away or having to stay at school longer than necessary, so in some case detention is a good consequence to prevent “bad” behaviour, but there’s also a lot of kids who will continue to do wrong regardless of what consequences there may be.

The way my school did it, no. If you didn't have your ID, you spent the day in a detention room. You weren't allowed to do homework or anything. You just had to sit in a freezing room, staring at a wall. If you were late to school and didn't have a parent to sign you in or you were late to a class even by five seconds and didn't have a pass, same thing only it was just for a class period. If students tried to sleep, the coach for the football team or security would kick your chair or yell at you. Which, I'm sorry, but if you put a bunch of teenagers in a freezing room most of which who brought no jacket (because Arizona) and got up at 5 or 6 in the morning, they are going to fall asleep. If you tried to work on school assignments or read, they'd yell at you.

Made straight As and spent a decent amount of time in detention. I’m there to learn and get good grades. If I can do that and be myself I’m gonna do that. It affected me zero after graduation so nah not effective.

In elementary school, no. It didn’t do any good. I didn’t get to eat lunch, I had to sit in a classroom during lunch and then on the curb during recess. The recess part is fine, but my parents were livid when they found out detention meant I couldnt get lunch. Same in middle school. High school, we didn’t have “lunch detention” anymore, it was an after school detention. I got a lot of detentions in elementary and middle school, I didn’t care. But high school I didn’t get a single one (1 because I matured a lot) because I always had practice after school and would have to run laps for missing practice.

It depends. My school’s detention is on Saturday and no one wants to deal with that. So yeah I’d say that’s pretty effective. Suspension is now “in school suspension” so it consists of sitting in one room all day, doing schoolwork. I’d say it’s a good deterrent. But some kids will always wind up there either way.

Why would anyone even go to a detention? What are they going to do?? Give you another one? That you won’t go to again? Suspension? Just show up to class.

It depends on the kid and the circumstances. I served detention twice and ISS once. I was not sorry any of those times and I told the adults so. xD
