Is he hiding me?

My boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year now and one day he suddenly decided to break up with me because stuff is going wrong in his life, which is a very valid reason. I said it’s totally okay and that we can get back together when he is ready. Then he says he wants to be my boyfriend and starts acting like my boyfriend. At school though he becomes very distant, barely touching me and when we do touch he looks around to see who’s watching and is being very careful with when we hold hands, hug, and kiss. After school when he walks me home and we are away from people at school, he will be all over me like he’s my boyfriend. Is he hiding me from everyone? Is he interested in another girl and he wants to seem available? I know it has nothing to do with his life because if it were that serious, he wouldn’t even act like my boyfriend at all. I’m not sure what to do anymore. What’s going on?
