I took mine at 38w, bc it lined up neatly with the end of a pay period. But I live in Canada so I had 17 weeks maternity leave, plus 36 weeks parental leave, plus my work said since I was still employed with them I “earned” my two weeks yearly vacation, which brought it up to just after my baby turned 1 when I was to come back.

In NJ since maternity leave is a state paid program, it starts at 36 weeks.  Once you make 36 weeks you just fill out the states temporary disability page and your automatically approved.  You still get your full 12-14 weeks after birth also. So you get 6 weeks (8 if csection)  paid through the program for the birth then the state has a second program that piggy backs which is also state paid for “newborn bonding” which is an additional 6 weeks that BOTH you and your spouse qualify for. All of this is paid maternity leave and also non taxable.

I wish I could wait until I had the baby to leave. My work union requires that I take two weeks of my own time before I get disability. So if baby decided to come two weeks early, I would only get paid for 4 weeks of disability instead of the 6 weeks. This child needs to stay in for long as possible.

I agree with the others about waiting until the baby born, the exception to me would be if you had complications that would require you to stop working sooner.
