Birth Story!

Felicia

Finally I get to share my birth story with you all. And let me tell you that everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING that I originally planned went straight out the door with this birth. It’s a long one so bare with me!

So I’m a first time mom. I was one of the lucky ones and had no morning sickness at all. Just major fatigue and the nauseous feeling during the first trimester. Second trimester was also good. Was able to work out some and had some energy to start getting things around for baby. Third trimester was also good. No nauseous feeling and no puking but the fatigue kinda came back but not as bad as the first trimester. Heck I had little to no swelling in my feet which was a big deal to me.

So everything was great. Doctor appointments were good. Baby was measuring great. Then at 37 weeks we found out that baby boy was in breech position. So I talked with my doctor and we decided to go with a version to flip baby around 40 weeks then start an induction right after. I should mention that when I first found out I was pregnant, I mentioned that I did NOT want a c-section. My grandma had one with her first. My mom had two c-sections. And my older sister had 2 c-sections.

So the day came around for the version and induction which was for Monday September 17th, 2018. My husband and I wake up and leave our place at 4:30 AM. We live an hour away from the hospital and had to be there by 5:30 AM. We get checked in. They take us up to our room and I get my gown and everything on. The nurses and my doctor come in and explain the procedure. So they wheel me back to the OR and they start inserting the epidural.

After making sure I was good and numb, they check baby on ultrasound then start to flip him. And no joke, it took them less than 2 minutes to flip him! They said that was the fastest they have ever seen that happen. So they take me back to my room and start the Pitocin to start contractions. I was having slight contractions when I first got in that were consistent but I didn’t feel any of it before.

Now the waiting game starts and it took forever. It was like every two hours, I’d dilate by 1 centimeter. When I started to get to 5cm, the epidural wasn’t quite strong enough so they upped it. That worked a little bit but the more I’d dilate, the more the epidural wouldn’t work.

It was around 12 AM on Tuesday morning that I was checked and was finally at 9cm. The whole time I’m in agony because of contractions but I just kept thinking thank goodness I’m almost there! I get checked again at 2 AM aaaanndd still at a 9cm and doesn’t look like I progressed any at all. So my doctor starts talking to me about a c-section because I was starting to get a fever and baby’s heart rate was getting to quick also. She said we could wait one more hour to see but if nothing changes, then we’d have to do a c-section. I said ok but after laying in bed moaning and in pure agony for 40 minutes and since at this point, there was NOTHING coming from the epidural I said just take me back and stop this pain. I told them though that I don’t want to feel shit when I’m back there. I was so over the pain. 😂

So here we go back to the OR. They get everything around and cut into me around 3:15 ish AM. At 3:27 AM baby boy was born my husband said with eyes wide open! He kinda cried but he didn’t start to really cry until the nurses started to mess with him. I was so relieved to be done! Baby Harold Wayne was born on 9/18/18 at 3:27 AM weighing 8lbs 5oz. Length was 20.5 inches long. His head though measured 27 inches around which the nurses said was a big head for a baby! And also most likely the reason he got stuck and why I couldn’t get past a 9cm. They couldn’t believe how cute he was though and just going on about him 😊

But even though he was born on Tuesday morning, we are still here at the hospital until tomorrow. I was finally released today in the afternoon but yesterday afternoon they took Harold’s sugar test and saw his sugar levels were low. They tried 3 times to test him after giving some glucosamine to raise it up and he just barely made it to the requirement the last time so they admitted him into NICU to monitor him. I’ve been going over to breastfeed him. There were a couple times his levels were great then the next time they’d be low. They said though that if they aren’t above by tomorrow, it’s been super close that they should be able to send us home. I sure hope so because I’m so ready to be home with my baby boy!

I just have to mention too that my husband has been the best support partner I could ask for. He was there getting anything I needed throughout the entire process and comforted me when I started balling about having a c-section. I couldn’t have done it without him!
