Midwife vs Dr?

Question

What are the differences between having a midwife or a Dr? My OB offers both, and they deliver at the same hospital.

In my experience, doctors (obstetricians) are much better as they have much more training as medical professionals, can give you medical advice, prescriptions, ultrasounds etc, and deal with any complications that arise in your pregnancy. I always get really inconsistent advice from midwives and find that they often aren’t able to help with things that I need.

Either is fine but it’s important that the midwife knows their limitations. They are incredibly well trained but if it’s a complicated pregnancy or delivery they will definitely need an assist from the OB. So just make sure it’s not a prideful midwife who won’t ask for help when needed :)

At my hospital (Kaiser California) a midwife delivers the baby and a doctor only takes over if it is a complicated labor. As far as I know, midwives can do nearly everything doctors can aside from some higher risk cases.
A midwife delivered my baby. Honestly it was pretty much nurses the entire time and the midwife came at the last minute to “catch” the baby lol.
We did a meet the midwife class before and they were all amazing. I personally had a good experience.

Generally midwives are more personable and are less likely to jump to unnecessary interventions. Obviously not all midwives and doctors are created equal, but generally that’s the case. I had great prenatal care with midwives, but ended up with a shit midwife when I was admitted in labor. I ended up with a shit OB when my son was actually born because my awesome midwife was with another Mom. I personally will never go to an OB (or give birth in a hospital again, honestly) unless it’s absolutely medically necessary
