If you have friends or family who smoke in their homes and they gifted you brand new baby clothes, would you allow your baby to wear them (after washing)? The concern would be third-hand residue.

Yes; if you soak in a vinegar rinse and then wash normally the acidity gets rid of everything. You can also leave it in the sun for a day and that helps.

I have a sanitize setting on my washer... I’d trust that to be sufficient

I would. I only say that because my sons grandparents smoke in the house and they use to babysit him so how clothes would smell like it. I wash them right away and you can’t tell. I don’t like it but just what it is.
