Late period, negative pregnancy test.

Okay so my period is now 6 days late today. The first time I took a test was the day my period was suppose to start, and the second time was a couple of days after that. Both tests were taken in the middle of the day since that’s when my husband isn’t home and I’m hoping to surprise him when we do get pregnant. also both tests were from the dollar store if the matters. So my question is, could I have tested too early? Is there a chance I could be pregnant? Has anyone else experienced this?
