Irregular TTC

If you have irregular periods when do you test for hcg? Also how many CD do you wait until you should go to the doctor if the hcg tests still are negative. I’m currently on CD 41. When I was taking birth control I had a 28day cycle. I stoped taking it in October. Any advice helps.
