Neither ear or forehead is accurate with babies. You want a rectal thermometer. Next best is under the arm.

Nothing should be going into a baby's ear. I recommend a forehead one and be sure to check the conversion chart so you know how many degrees to add to the reading. I also recommend getting a backup one for under the armpit (again, pay attention to how many degrees to add - typically it's 1).
