Has anyone paid for lab testing outside of their doctor?

Our insurance doesn’t kick in until the 1st and it’ll likely be a while after that until we are able to see the doctor. I’m 5w1d today. I’ve heard some people have ordered HCG testing via a lab, without their doctor requesting it. It’s a relatively nominal fee, and I’ve been considering doing it. Please do not come to warn me against doing so - I’m not especially anxious, but it would be nice to have the peace of mind, as it’ll be a long while until we can actually go to the doctor for viability. Telling me not to do so or warning me against it won’t change my mind.

I’m looking for feedback from others who have ordered their own testing. How did it go? Was it smooth? Awkward? No issue? Thank you!
