How do you pick gifts?

Well I'm in kinda a new relationship and I'm not that type of person who gives gifts or wants to receive them. How do you pick gifts for your SO?(I'm looking for a birthday present) tried googling but every suggestion seems wrong or cringy.

Well in my relationship ship we gift each other things we can do. My birthday he took me to a concert for an artist I like, his birthday I took him to Alcatraz (he’s never been) and took him to his favorite restaurant, our anniversary we went to Disneyland, another anniversary we went to a music festival in LA. We discussed that we liked gifts like that much more than materialistic things (nothing wrong with that either). But we also agreed if we got each other materialistic things it would be things we would really use or need like new socks, equipment for something, shoes, etc. 
Sometimes it’s easier to just ask!

I just buy people stuff to make drinks with if they are over 21. It’s easy, enjoyable, and it doesn’t create clutter.
