Just thinking.

Audrey

Sometimes, knowledge is power.

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

But always... the Truth will set you free.

I used to think that when Christ said the truth will set you free, He meant the truth about everything. As I got older, I learned that knowledge is not always a good thing. For example, you’re better off not knowing about porn. Obviously, some of it is unavoidable, but don’t go researching for more information. This leads to trouble.

I started thinking about how much people really don’t know, or can’t know. And began to believe that ignorance is bliss. Like at a restaurant, you don’t really know what goes on in the kitchen. You know there are food standards, but unless you or someone you know is back there, you have no guarantee they are followed. So you eat in peace, not knowing or thinking about it.

How then can Christ say that the truth will set you free? He wasn’t talking about earthly knowledge, metaphysical information, or even the wisdom we gain from personal experiences. He was talking about the spiritual truth that God brings into your life through salvation. This freedom grows through prayer and scripture reading as you build a relationship with the Holy Spirit.

That’s why Proverbs 9:10 says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy Spirit is the beginning of understanding.
