How do you manage ur finances as a couple?
So here's my situation: I'm 4 months pregnant and have been asking my bf since we started ttc that we set up a joint account. By this I mean a fixed amount we deposit for shared costs like rent, car insurance, medical expenses related to the pregnancy, groceries and baby related stuff. He said Ok but has been dragging his feet so we've still not done it and as a result I've had to pay for all medical pregnancy expenses so far and I've put off buying baby stuff. Today we had a big discussion about it. Turns out he didn't want a joint account after all. Our background is that he's an economic immigrant from Africa, only been able to work full time this past year because he only got the right to work here a year ago, whilst I've been working full time for 10 years. As a consequence I paid rent and most other expenses up until a year ago, now we contribute equally. I've been saving to buy a house. He says he doesn't want a joint account because he thinks I buy things we don't need when I grocery shop. I told him I'll pay those things seperately from my own account just like I pay for vacations from my own account coz he doesn't want or need vacations. He also thinks our little girl that we're expecting can just wear all 2nd hand boys clothes we got from my sister and we don't need to buy her anything new. He wants to splurge on a big expensive car and electronics I don't think we need though. He proposed we put all our money together in one account, but I worked hard to save all the years before I met him and I know he pays several hundreds of euros to family back home in Africa. With a completely joint account I'll have to pay for cars I don't want or need and he'd have to pay for holidays he doesn't want. So to me a joint account where we each deposit a monthly sum but keep the rest separate seems most fair. What do u guys think? How do you arrange ur finances?
