Parental issues

My in-laws are staying with us for the week. We got in a huge fight because we didn’t invite them to have dinner with us? They’re on this wacko diet and said they would cook their own food. So I was like ok. And I made my families dinner and we ate. They said I’m being so disrespectful and I should treat them like guests. I find it odd. They’re our parents, not guests. I don’t know.
