Do you think it’s rude of someone to ask for cash instead of gifts for a wedding?

I was watching the office for like the third time and I’m on the episode where Pam asks everyone for money instead of gifts for her wedding. I’ve actually known someone to do this. Do you think it’s rude and distasteful? Or fine?

I don’t think people even have to ask that’s just what’s done at weddings now.

I think if you didn't ask what they wanted and they sent an announcement saying cash only - that would be rude. Typically if they dont do a registry I would assume they want cash. I think most people want cash.

All I asked from people was cash and gift cards, then again a month after my wedding I moved to Alaska to be with my hubby.

My ex husband and I didn't make a registry so everyone would just give us cash because it was more useful than getting a bunch of crap 🤷🏼‍♀️

So me and my now husband bad this argument. He wanted cash, and I wanted to do a registry. We had just bought a house, and already had the typical household needs. We were wanting to start doing some renovations, but obviously people aren’t going to pay for hardwood floors lol But there were some stuff that I wanted for the house that I wouldn’t want to be the one buy, so we made a small registry for people who weren’t comfortable with giving cash. Then if our close friends/family asked we would tell them that we would want money or a gift card to Lowe’s/Home Depot to put towards our home Reno so they knew that it wasnt going to waste. (Once had a friend who we gave them $200 for their wedding gift (our bffs) and the next weekend so took the wedding money and went and bought them both apple watches.....which rubbed me the wrong way. So I guess to each their own

This is good to know. Because where I live people generally give really bad (cheap/ordinary) gifts at weddings. I always go to weddings with a card full of cash! 
Do you write you prefer no gifts but money on the invitation?

I meant *no. I dont think its rude. Says time returning a gift they dont want and they can actually get what they need.

I did this for my first college graduation. I just felt like I would rather people not spend their money on gifts that I don’t need when I actually could be doing something else. 
Whether it was $1 or $300 I appreciated not having so much stuff that was useless. My friends understood
