Husband and the inability to put dishes in the dishwasher

UGH!!!! Why is it so hard to put the dishes in the dishwasher? My husband will put them in if he is doing the dishes but if he just used dishes he rinses them and puts them on the side of the sink- KNOWING THE DISHWASHER HAS DIRTY DISHES AND IT'S NOT FULL SINCE HE JUST EMPTIED IT!

I can't figure it out and it drives me nuts.
