How did you get your toddler to stop nursing?

Question

Concurrently 17 weeks pregnant with baby number 5. My youngest is two and a half and still nurses. I have been experiencing a lot of boob and nipple pain and I am beyond ready to be done with breastfeeding. I do not want to be nursing him still when the new baby comes.  Unfortunately cold turkey is not going to be an option for me nore him. Any mommies out there with any advice on how to get my toddler to stop nursing?

Work on getting it down to once a day “not right now, but later.”
We got down to once a day and then periodically he’d forget to ask and now he hasn’t asked in five days. He’s 2.5 as well and there were no tears for either of us. I’m pretty sure we’re done now.

I stopped right before 3 with my daughter but santa took mommy's milk to the north pole and left her a big girl present. So maybe make up a milk fairy to trade for mommy's milk.

My friend had to put this “no nail biting” cream on her nipples. It’s safe to ingest but apparently smells and tastes horrible!

I was down to naptime and bedtime with my 2yo. One day I just couldn't take it and told her my Yummies had boo boos and were ouchy. I asked her to pat them and cuddle instead. I was *shocked* she went for it just fine. And every time she's pointed and asked if they're boo boo, I tell her yes, and that's that. I might have let her put bandaids on them for effect, but she didn't think of that. 
With a previous child I would count backwards from 10 on each side and then cut back to 5, and then told her she was a big girl and big girls drink from cups instead of Yummies. I tandem nursed that one with the baby for a little bit and weaned her on her 3rd birthday, so it was a special turning point. That worked well too.

I’m right there with you! My kiddo had almost totally self weaned and when I got pregnant he got super clingy and was wanting to nurse like 5 times a day. We have worked it back down to just bedtimes and since he’s sick now a little if he wakes up in the middle of the night. I’m hopeful that we can kick it in a couple of months. I’m so done.

Cut out a feeding every 3 to 4 days. My milk dried up when I got pregnant and that helped us wean. Make sure you cut any middle of the  night feedings first thing too.
