When to start pumping?

Question

My baby is 11 days old. 
When or how do I known it’s safe to start pumping? 
Am I allowed to keep adding milk into the same storage bottle/bag if I collected them in the same day?

I was told dont pump for the first month.... ugh what a mistake!! I was in so much pain and engorged after a few days i had no choice. Your body will tell you listen to it. Im taking my pump to the hospital this time around i need the relief.

You can pump now if you want, but you run the risk of becoming an oversupplier (which could happen anyway). If you want to have to pump your boobs empty after every feed, then yeah go for it. I personally just try to maintain my supply for what he needs and still produce over 50oz a day. I don’t even pump for extra milk either. I’ve cut out all night time pumps now that he sleeps through the night. I just feel like I don’t have time for anything and he eats every 3 hours. Couldn’t imagine having to take up 45+ minutes to pump during that tine as well.

You can pump right away if you want. I actually pumped in the hospital a few times, but did not do it again after I was discharged until our baby girl was six weeks old. And I would not keep adding milk to the same bag or bottle. I always used a new bag for session. 👍🏾

You can start right away but you might have an oversupply. I started the second day after birth because my baby wasn’t latching well. After a few weeks I was getting 15-20 oz each pump and couldn’t sleep more than 3 hours in one stretch because of engorgement. It was so much milk we had no idea what to do with it and couldn’t even donate because I was on prescription medication. I ended up buying an industrial deep freezer. I gradually reduced to 3 pumps a day after a couple months. I got pregnant again 5 months pp so now I am slowly weaning to give myself a little break and we are using the frozen milk. Ultimately the oversupply was a blessing for me although it was very difficult in the beginning. I plan to do the same when this baby comes in April because I will be feeding both babies and would love to build a massive freezer stash again.

I did it!!
Thank you for the support, because I was so scared. I’ve read horror stories of when ladies have done things incorrectly, and I really did not want to have one myself.
I actually pumped for 20 minutes each boob (with baby taking one of them for 10 minutes equalling 20 for that boob). I know that’s pretty long, but I felt really heavy and it was great to feel that load released 🤩.
My next task is to figure out how to build a supply while breast feeding also. If anyone has any advice for this, I welcome it.
