Failed Epidural- 36 hour labor
So it’s finally my turn 😭😭 sitting here 18 hours after delivering my baby girl.
Thursday 1/17- went in to my regular midwife appointment, I was 38+6, they wouldn’t sweep my membranes because their policy is to be at least 39 weeks. But she did check my cervix and I was only 1 cm dilated 🙄
she asked if I felt 5-10 kicks an hour and I said, no it’s more like 1-2 kicks....
She sent me to labor and delivery triage just to do a non stress test to be sure 👍🏼 no biggie
We went in- monitor was picking up all sorts of movement! Baby was perfectly healthy but I was just not feeling the movement they picked up on the monitor 🤷🏻♀️ L&D discharged me and said my midwife would call and follow up in the morning
Friday 1/18- midwife calls around 8 am- and asks if I feel anything different. I didn’t- same 1-2 kicks an hour but I wasn’t nervous because the monitor was picking up more than I could feel
She ordered a rush BPP ultrasound, just for extra reassurance
Got to the ultrasound appointment at 1:30- baby’s heart rate was great but she wasn’t flexing her hand or wiggling around like she should be... we tried having me lay on my side, drink juice, everything.
The tech left the room for like 45 minutes and left me there, a group of doctors and radiologists come in and sit me down like they’re giving me terrible news, and say they talked to my midwife and I need to go to labor and delivery and get induced... okie dokie!
I go home and pack my bags, and off we go!!
5:30 pm- checked into labor and delivery, they check my cervix, 1.5 cm dilated 👍🏼 so I made some progression at least in 24 hours 🙄
7pm- inserted Cooks Catheter (Foley balloon) holy shit that hurt. Like period cramps on steroids
5am- started pitocin
1/19
Noon- cooks catheter removed
3 pm- water broken by midwife
5 pm- dilated to a 6 and contractions feel like death
7 pm- epidural placed and was seeming to work fine
9 pm- EXTREME PAIN. All lower back
Apparently epidurals don’t work for back labor..... they checked my cervix and I was 10 cm and 100% effaced
I pushed for three hours st first
Felt like essentially no pain meds and I couldn’t move my legs 😭
I got exhausted around midnight and they gave me extra epidural meds and something to make me sleep
I passed out and woke up two hours later with the overwhelming need to push
1/20
1 am- started pushing again and that is a WORKOUT
2:39 am midwife starts downing up as she’s crowning and told me to stop pushing for a minute ... I couldn’t. I needed her out
So- I pushed harder and she flew out of me and midwife caught her mid air almost!!
Mila Rose was born 1/20 ❤️❤️❤️
