Epidural?

I didn’t know that an epidural could paralyze you if you move. Did any of you who got the epidural moved ever so slightly when they put it in? I’m not a big fan of needles so I know I’m going to move a little bit or tense up when they do it.

I’m sure I was moving “ever so slightly” as I was having intense contractions every 2 minutes. I wouldn’t worry too much about becoming paralyzed from the epidural. In fact, an anesthesiologist is the highest paid medical profession. They’re trained to do exactly what they’re doing and it is risky, so they have to be well educated. You honestly won’t even think about it when you are in labor. At least I didn’t- I just wanted to stop feeling the contractions. If they said they were going to hit me over the head with an iron pan to knock me out I would’ve signed up for that too.

I've had 4 epidurals, no issues. The nurse holds you still and you're numbed when the needle actually goes in.  I don't even know someone who knows someone that this has happened to.

Epidurals come with a whole slew of risks, some minor, like itching or headache, some major, including temporary or permanent nerve damage and even death.
On anything that is going to be introduced to your body you should research the benefits and the risks and then make your decision based on what you’re comfortable with.
Nothing is completely without risk, you just have to decide what risks are worth it, and what risks are not.

I’ve never had one, but among my close friends and family, these things happened: epidural didn’t work on one side of the body, so she felt everything on the right. Needle went too deep, actually wound up leaking spinal fluid and had a long recovery that included having to patch the hole, awful headaches, had to lay flat for several weeks after delivery. One wound up breaking her tailbone while pushing because she couldn’t feel what she was doing.
For every one of those stories, there’s another one where everything went fine and they had no regrets. Just make sure you understand the birthing process. If you are at all interested in natural birth, read “A Guide to Childbirth “ by Ina May Gaskin. She explains the slippery slope of hospital interventions, including epidural, and empowers you to do without.

I flinched last time, the anesthesiologist just said dont do that again. He got it placed and all was good. I waited quite awhile during that labor to get it so It was harder to stay still than with the first baby

Just know it’s almost impossible to not move while having contractions and having to sit up. It’s hard. I got it and I regret getting it to this day. They punctured my spine and spinal fluid leaked out causing the worst headaches! I had to have a second epidural to fix it but it didn’t fix it. Luckily it only lasted a week, but I literally had to lay flat the entire week on a couch trying to breastfeed. My friend had an epidural and was almost paralyzed. That’s all she’ll tell me because it was super traumatic for her.

I've had 2 epidules. My mom had 4. I am okay and no issues.

I know 2 people who moved, my mother jumped a little when she was in labor with my younger brother. They had to lay her down and make her wiggle her toes and stuff to make sure she wasn't paralyzed. She said it was very scary but shes fine.
And my friend who had one has permanent damage in one of her legs from the same thing. She was in a wheelchair for a few weekd after having her daughter. She thought she'd never be able to walk again but shes ok now, just some pain once in a while.
