Maternity leave and short term disability question?

My employer says that for the first 2 weeks it has to come from my vacation/sick time and the last 4 weeks comes from short term disability which will pay only 60%. They told me the other 40% HAS to come from the rest of my vacation/sick time. Does this sound normal to anyone else? Why am I’m being forced to make up the rest of the 40%? I’m upset because I wanted to use the rest of it to extend my maternity leave.

Do you have your employee handbook? I would look into the policies regarding leave and you might need to reach out to HR to have them explain why you are required to receive 100% of your pay during that time. I know a company can require you to use your vacation/sick time concurrently with FMLA, so I’m not sure if the remaining 40% they are talking about is because of that. But if you haven’t worked there for a year or met the the 1250 hour requirement then you aren’t even dealing with FMLA and it might just be company policy.

You should be able to take 6 weeks without losing your job, however that 6 weeks they are required to allow with the Family Medical Leave Act does not have to be a paid leave. If you wanted to get paid during your maternity leave, what you've described might just be your company's policy.

Disbaility only covers a certain amount from your pay but it is 60 percent of your pre taxed income not what your paycheck is. You technically do not have to use your vacation/sick time to make up for it but if you want the rest of it during that time you have to. I get 12 to 14 weeks in California for disability and it's also 60 percent and my husband gets 6 weeks at 60 percent. We are saving money now and using our taxes to help pay our Bill's during that time.

It depends on which Short term you have.  I have the enhanced which actually pays 100% for maternity.  If it was just because I was sick then it would pay 60%.  I have blue cross blue shield.

Yeah short term disability only pays 66% at every company I’ve worked for so sounds normal to me. Can you not just take that 60% and not top it off? Then you could still use your vacation afterwards
