Is it hard to get pregnant while breastfeeding?

I’m 10 months PP and I’m still breastfeeding.

My son is 19 months. I stopped breastfeeding at 18 months. My period did not return until 16 months post partum. I'm not sure if I was ovulating or not. We started trying for our second around 16 months pp. My cycles were long 40-50 days at that point. I did not get pregnant my first cycle ttc, although my strips did show I ovulated. I stopped nursing my second month ttc. Ovulation strips again showed I ovulated. I did conceive that cycle.

I have a friend who conceived before she ever even got her period back- total accident and she was a stay at home mom, exclusively breastfeeding.

Conceiving while EXCLUSIVELY breastfeeding is somewhat hard. From the point of the baby not relying on you 100% for nutrition, that changes rapidly.

Every one is different, some have a hard time while others stay very fertile.

I read on planned parenthood website that the only way breastfeeding is effective as BC is if u nurse every 4 hours during the day and 6 at night. Basically if you pump and let someone feed the baby while you take a break (no nursing or pumping) then you can get pregnant. My dr doesn’t give hormonal BC while breastfeeding so I’m being extra careful.
