Newly diagnosed

Amanda

Hello!

I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes @ 25 weeks. I have my first dietitian appointment at the end of the week. I've never felt any symptoms throughout my entire pregnancy.

My questions are does everyone have to monitor blood sugar levels? Who prescribes you a monitor? Can this be managed with out monitoring by diet and exercise?

Thanks

It can be managed by diet and exercise (but not always, especially fasting numbers - it’s not always in your control if diet isn’t enough, the hormones play a huge role). BUT you have no way of knowing if you’re managing without testing. You need to monitor your blood sugar, no way around that. I’m in Canada- so depending on where you are it could be different but I was given a monitor by the gestational diabetes clinic when I attended the (mandatory) GD class. Then they wrote a prescription for the test strips and lancets. My drug plan covers these.

Call and follow up if it’s been a week or two and you haven’t heard. Where are you located? I’m in Toronto. Feel free to message me if you want more details about the plan they have me on. I’m happy to share

I've gotten referrals for both but I haven't heard anything yet. I'm trying to keep calm. Being upset doesn't help either of us.

The internet it terrifying! Also newly diagnosed and I went online and it scared the crap out of me. Had a meeting with a diabetes educator and it made me feel so much better. Meet with a dietician next week. We just gotta remember that it is most likely temporary!

Probably depends on your numbers.Mine is managed by diet. I have a little think to measure my blood sugar levels. I started off with four times a day, every day. Then I tested four times a day every third day. But today I was told to test every day again for no apperent reason imo.It was given to me at my appointment about GD and we'll discuss it at my follow up appointments. But right now it's just managed by diet 😊

I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks. My midwife gave me a glucose monitor and I manage it with diet. I eat basically the same but no sugary drinks, sweet, cakes, chocolate or loads of fruit xx

I was diagnosed with it too. Was given a monitor and had weekly appointments. For me it didn't matter what I ate my morning sugar levels (fasting) were always high. So I was put on insulin, they start on a low dose. It was increased weekly and then it still wasn't working and I had 2 different types on insulin. And again it was increased and increased. I fi Ally got to the "right amount" about one week before baby arrived 😂. Baby was a big baby in general 4510g (9.9lb) and 55cm long! But just a big healthy baby. No birth complications either.

I have it and need to monitor my diet. My dietitian provided me with the supplies I need to test my sugar four times a day. I am not on insulin as my numbers are pretty normal. I do my best to stay away from added sugars or anything high in sugars and/or carbs. I drink water mainly but if okay with your doctor you can still drink things like coffee. I occasionally have a small glass of oj with breakfast etc. It really just depends on your numbers, you'll have to play with your diet.
