It is appropriate to ask your child’s babysitter if they are _____ religion?

I was interviewed by a potential couple to care for their child. One of the last questions they asked me was if I was a Christian. 
They said they only wanted to know because their child liked to sing bible stories. 
I said no I’m not, but I have absolutely no problem singing any songs they would like, and that doesn’t affect my work.
I am very qualified to care for any child,  and though I don’t have proof they didn’t hire me because I said I wasn’t a Christian, I can’t help but feel like that was the reason they didn’t want me for the job.
I know they are entitled to chose whomever they wish to have in their home caring for their kids, but if it’s inappropriate to ask that in any other professional setting why would they ask me that for a care provider position?

While it personally doesn't bother me what religion my babysitter is, it might some. My last sitter was a Wiccan but she was good with my kids and they loved her. She watched Veggie Tales and read their little picture Bible if they asked. As long as a sitter wouldn't contradict my beliefs to my children behind my back I'm good.

Any other position probably not but I can understand wanting a babysitter to be the same religion if they want them to teach about that. Like how people send their kids to private Christian schools because they want them learning in an environment where the same values and lessons are stressed.

Considering it’s a baby sitter and someone you are leaving your kid with ya I think it’s fine.

Just keep looking idk why it matters if you had proof of it or not, they didn't hire you. End of story.. continue your search for a better fit. They obviously didn't see you fit for their needs.

I can understand why the parents would be picky about things when it comes to who they leave their kid with. Is the kid around the question-asking stage? Perhaps they simply want someone who can answer questions about Christianity and faith should their child ask?

Initially I probably would have never done this when interviewing a babysitter for my child, but now that I think about it...I would either want someone that has no religion or someone that isn’t super religious babysitting my child. If they could refrain from bringing religion into it all together I wouldn’t bring up their religion or judge them based on it. Some parents want their kids to be brought up a certain way and if someone opposes or can’t help with that I think it could become a problem.

I understand if parents want a baby sitter with the same kind of values / beliefs that they want to teach their children. But I also wish parents would let their children be around different kinds of people so they can become more understanding and open minded. It must be a horrible feeling thinking that you may have not got a job because of your religious beliefs.

I hate those questions. When asked in this position it makes me so uncomfortable. A patient once asked if I believed in god and of course said yes, and that's the biggest lie. 
It shouldn't matter.
