Birth plan?

Are you girls doing a birth plan? My friend is telling me not to do one because it won't go how i want it to? I want to make one because i have certain things i want to happen and i want to make sure they happen.

Give birth. 😂 I mean honestly with my first I went in there with an open mind and told them whatever is necessary to get my son here safe and healthy do it. I’m doing the same with this one. Just kinda roll with it like I did with my first.

You can make one just to state your preferences but just don’t expect it to be followed to the letter. It’s more of a birth wishlist 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was told the same thing, and planned not to make one, but my sister an L&D nurse told me to do it. She said they really appreciate when patients have them so they can try to do things how they want.

It’s good idea to write down your wishes and what’s most important for nurses/MDs to know and try to work with you. But just remember things may happen and you sort of just have to go with the flow of labor and how it progresses. There’s no predicting how it will progress. The nurse and MD we’re starting to talk to me about starting pitocin to speed things up only a couple hours after I got hooked up to my IV and signed my papers. I was like hell no so I got up to tried to walk down the hall (just to turn back around cause I couldn’t do it), kept taking poops, and sat on the ball which helped. I think I surprised them with how it progressed without just jumping on medication.

It doesn’t hurt to write down all your preferences, but stay flexible! Things won’t go 100 percent as planned of course but it helps you let the nurses and docs know what you prefer.

I am doing a birth plan. If for no other reason, I think it is important to research and know options/common medical interventions, so that you can give informed consent.

I did one just so I know what I would like to happen but I don't plan on taking it to the hospital or anything. I know it never really goes as planned anyways

I think it’s great to know what your preferences are and have them written down so everyone can see them. I think it needs to be understood that the “plan” may need to change multiple times. It’s impossible to predict so much about birth. Like with my first we could have never predicted he’d come out sucking his thumb which made pushing very difficult and pressed on his cord in the birth canal so his heart rate dropped crazy low and the vacuum was needed to help him out quick. I certainly didn’t plan on the vacuum but was totally fine with it to ensure my baby got out as healthy as possible.

I think it’s great to have your preferences laid out. Of course birth is unpredictable, but also you should expect your care team to follow your wishes when possible.
