If you’ve worked/volunteered at a VET or ANIMAL SHELTER please HELP!

I have an interview tomorrow for the animal shelter.

They’re wanting someone with experience that has worked or volunteered at a shelter or vet, which I do not have & she knows that bc I went to introduce myself to her & let her know but that I really wanted the job!

I LOOOOVE animals & want this SOOO bad! I need a job anyways bc I’m about to be homeless, so this will help me with finding a new place to live, they start out with good pay!

Anyone who has volunteered or worked in either have any advice for me? What to expect? What I should know?

My interview is tomorrow, I am hoping it will go really good, but I would like to be more informed about what’s it like to work at a shelter/vet prior to going in.

(Sorry if it doesn’t belong here, but I have more active women in this group)

I worked at a few different places after high schoo... doggy daycares, shelters, and as a vet assistant at different animal hospitals. I think the most important thing is just to be a good listener, follow instructions well, have a good work ethic. The job is NOT about playing with animals, it's about keeping the facility up and running and making sure the animals are clean fed and cared for. Make sure you have a strong stomach and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty (like covered in bodily fluids dirty) and you cannot be afraid of the animals. All in all I'd say the number one most important thing to get hired in a place like that is to focus on work ethic and attendance (you cannot call out at a job like this) and following rules/instructions.

Well i wouldnt say a "few" agressive animals lol. It depends where you are / what you're doing. When I was at the shelter it was like 80% aggressive dogs (most of them had been there for years) and if you're working at a vet most of them will be pissed at you because they dont want to be there & dont want to be restrained. Just be aware going in it is going to be like 65% cleaning, 25% dealing with pissed off animals, and maybeeee 10% dealing with nice animals lol. It is 100% different than everyone thinks it is! Not trying to turn you off just trying to be real with you!

Yea that’s a given! Thank you!!! I have a strong stomach, not afraid of any animals, I know there will be those few who are aggressive. I’m a great listener & patient. I clean up great, I knew that was the main thing I’d be doing, but I’m so excited lol. Cleaning up after animals sounds so much better than dealing with people all day somewhere else 😂

I volunteered at a animal shelter in high school. I mostly just cleaned litter boxes and played with the animals though. I hope you get the job, I had a lot of fun!

I hope I do too!! It pays pretty decent & there’s not a lot of jobs where I live unless it’s factory work! Which this job pays more than a few of the factory’s do starting out! I’d much rather be around animals than people & machinery all day lol

If it is something you haven’t done state that you are a quick learner and can master new tasks. And you love animals that’s a major plus !! Hope all goes well and you get the job !

I went & introduced myself to the woman over hiring, after applying for the job! Told her my name, that I just wanted to introduce myself, that I didn’t have experience but I’m a hard worker & I love animals & that I really want this job. She was really nice & said I’d hear something next week (this week) so I think that may have helped me. As others have applied but nothing yet.

Think about what you want to be doing and throw it away! You’ll be doing the cleaning and the “dirty work”. If you love animals it shouldn’t be a big deal but it’s not going to be what you expect(know that going in) be honest with them that you’ve never done this before but you are eager to learn and you are quick learner. They would rather have someone who has no idea but is willing to learn then someone who is experienced and hates it. Let them know you open to any and all tasks they have. You are always up for a challenge. Most importantly STAY CALM and BE POSITIVE!!! Don’t over think or stress. Good luck!!!

Yea I’d figure I’d be doing things like cleaning up after the animals, feeding them & what not. But for $10 an hour I’m up for it! I’d rather pick up dog shit than deal with most people anyways 😂 thank you for the advice!! I’ve definitely been stressing but this opportunity has been a weight lifted off of my shoulders. I’m trying to be positive about it!
