Which subjects do you think are missed in highschool that should be mandatory?
I just had a trying conversation/debate with someone who had no idea how statistics worked or how to read a graph. She was very adamant that she was correct in her "logic" because she did not understand rates and statistics and how it affects outcomes. I can't help but think that the whole situation/debate could have been avoided if statistics were more widely taught in highschools.
I didn't take a statistics course until college and although it was required for my major, it isn't required for everyone. I did take a calculus class in highschool (and two more in college - technically 4 because I tested out of two). I have used calculus maybe once or twice in my life, I have used geometry maybe a handful. I know they are both great for problem solving and I did actually really love them (got a math minor) but statistics are everywhere. On the news, in every day life, in situations where it could directly impact someone's life. I personally feel that is much more useful in the real world. I also would love to see more personal finance education because I feel that would help with a lot (or at least some) of problems people, especially the younger generations, have with finances. Sexual education is also a big one but in my school in particular that was actually covered pretty well (though there could have been improvements).
Are there studies that you feel should be required in highschool that are glossed over or non-existent? Things every person should know? Are there ones you would trade for it or ones you think are not important that are required currently?
