Join a sorority?

Question

So I’m going to a university this year and my best friend is already there. She’s joined a sorority and asks me if I will too. She pays $700 a semester for it and I don’t see much benefit of it. It crosses my mind and I go back and forth on the idea because if I wanted to the money wouldn’t be an issue. I think of it as a way to meet a lot of new people and be part of an organization but then again is it worth it? Would it be beneficial to me? What are your thoughts and have you been a part of one?

I joined one my freshman year of college. The people were fake, and it was extremely expensive. If you couldn’t go to a meeting, or an event, you’d get fined. I ended up quitting, and so did a lot of my friends. Other people have better experiences, though.

I was in ΑΟΠ in college and I still miss those girls every day. I wouldn't reccomend you join just because your friends did but maybe try going through recruitment and see if there's a chapter you feel drawn to. Use your judgement and maybe you'll find something great.

Ahh I love this conversation! So I am a sorority girl and I have several views on this. I know what it’s like not to be one and to be one. I joined a sorority my sophomore year of college and it changed my life. The reason why it did is because of the type of sorority I joined and my intentions for joining this sorority. Based on what you described... your friend is in a sorority that falls under American Panhellenic Association (APA). This matters because that council does not have the same kind of structure as an The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). This matters because APA, it’s a college hobby, it’s a social thing you do in college that by the time you graduate you are expected to outgrow but have memories to cherish. However with NPHC it’s a life time commitment and you are constantly surrounded by sisters. If you are serious about joining a sorority you have to figure out what you hope to gain from the experience. And from there take initiatives to learn about Greek life; because I can honestly say right reasons or not it does have its perks on campus. However it is all about what you make of the experience if you choose to do it.

It really depends on the sorority! In my college (and probably other big schools as well) there is a hierarchy of sororities with the ones at the top known for being mean and a huge time commitment, and the ones at the bottom being nicer and more laid back. There are also professional sororities to join that aren’t just for social purposes. You can always go through the rush process, learn about different orgs, and end up not doing it. That’s probably what I would recommend.

My university doesn't have any sororities so I didn't get the choice. But I know a lot of people at other colleges who joined them and are having a great time.

I was in one! My dues weren’t nearly that high though. It was a great way to meet people and feel less homesick. I really enjoyed and my sorority sisters were there for me through a dark time in my life. Don’t go broke trying to join one though.

So I am currently in a sorority and it is a good way to make friends. You’ll meet a lot of girls from that sorority as well as the other sororities so a good thing would be that you probably won’t be lonley during school! HOWEVER!! I don’t feel comfortable in mine, Idk if it’s the same in diffrent sororities but whenever there’s a big group of girls, there is always small cliques and that’s what i hate! The one group that will have more fun that the rest of the girls and won’t invite others to join. And since we are in a pandemic, and most stuff is virtual, it’s gonna be harder to talk and keep in contact with girls except for in weekly meetings. Just do your research on them and rushing is a good way to see how the girls really are:)
