How old was your LO when they were to identify animals?

I mean like when there’s a couple animals in front of your child and you ask them “where is the cow” “where is the cat” and they’re able to point them out. How old was your child when they were able to do this? I don’t mean a couple animals, I mean all the “basic” zoo or farm animals. Cow, pig, chicken, dog, lion, or tiger. Things like that. I only ask because my son is 2 and he still isn’t able to point things out. Should I be worried?

Both my daughters did this by 12 months, but both were very early talkers. I read a lot of books to them and many of the books had animals in them.

My daughter has been doing animal sounds since about 14 months, and has been able to identify different animals and say their names since about 18 months. She's very verbal, but not all kids are. I wouldn't worry unless he's not communicating verbally at all. Then it might be a good idea to talk with Early On.

I work with/teach kids for a living. I wouldn’t be worried yet, language associations are still very much developing. 
More importantly I would look at - how long have you been teaching him this skill? (Are you actually actively teaching it or just hoping he will know?) 
Can he identify other things receptively (ask him to point out). Like colors, shapes, other things he is interested in? 
Is he pointing things out to you to get your attention or information about something?

My son is 11m and can point out three animals but we have had these farm animal bath toys since he was like 4m. Plus for some reason this kid looooves cows. He sees a cow and he just gets so excited. He doesn’t talk yet but if you ask where certain animals are he points it out. Kids are all different remember that mama. My son has two cousins who are around the same age and all of them are a different places. Just keep repeating it and make it fun.

My son is 20 months and he’s know basically all the basics since about 17-18 months. He’s obsessed with animals though.

Since like 14 months old. He can’t say the word but if you ask him “where’s the cow” hell point to all the right animals in books and real ones. He’ll also do all the animal sounds. What does the cow say? He’ll go “mooo!”  We’ve been playing practicing for a long time though and he gets to see them all a lot because my sister owns a farm.
