Will you ask your kids to pay towards rent/bills if they still live with you after age 18?
I saw this shared on Facebook this morning and I really disagree.
I see what it's saying, but surely being successful is also dependent on knowing how to be financially responsible?
I left home at 17 but moved back in for 2 years when I was 20. My parents never asked me to pay anything, but I voluntarily gave towards utilities (because costs naturally went up with another person in the house), I paid my individual bills (phone, car insurance etc), bought all of my own groceries, toiletries, etc, and did my own cooking, dishes and laundry. I didn't see why my parents should have to pay more or work harder just because I decided to move back home as an adult. Maybe I feel differently because I'd already had experience of paying my own bills and living by myself so I really understood how much stress all of that stuff can cause at times.
What do you guys think? Should adults who live with their parents pay their way, or should the parents still take responsibility for them while they're living at home?
