Hot showers and hot baths what’s the verdict mamas?

Hey ladies! So I know taking a hot bath and sitting in a hot tub is a no no for pregnancy...but what about hot showers? I’ve turned my showers down recently even though I love scolding hot showers. My husband came in and set the temp to what he thinks is safe. Which to me is too cold. What have moms experienced or had a dr recommend? My first appointment isn’t till March 13th I’m 7 weeks. Thank you!

My doctors haven’t said anything about not taking hot baths or showers. They just said don’t go into saunas or hot tubs. I like my shower pretty warm and for a while I was taking my temp in the shower and it never got over 99. You apparently don’t want to go over 102.

Hello. Well taking a hot bath isn’t necessarily a ‘no no’. It’s very old advice that hasn’t really been current for decade but for some reason a lot of people and even doctors repeat it. The idea of keeping the body cooler was thought of after an old study showed that exercise and getting hot with a raised heartbeat caused better health and no ill effects to the foetus. Because they could only test it so far, they came up with a limitation as a precaution as they were still worried that if women got very hot it would harm a foetus but there was no scientific evidence for this, is was merely a precaution as we didn’t know it was definitely safe. Very little work seems to have been done on this since then until very recently when a larger study showed that even if you do something like very sweaty exercise, it’s just not possible to raise the temperate in your uterus/of your foetus and therefore the study suggests getting pretty hot is safe. This would make sense since a lot of women live in very hot and humid countries. It’s up to you what you take from the research or what your doctor says but this one is not as definite as things like not drinking alcohol or smoking. I certainly wouldn’t be too worried about getting a bit hot occasionally. Personally I still have very warm baths (not quite hot but also not cool) and showers. If you think about it, most people don’t get that hot in a shower unless you like the heat very high. Even though personally I don’t think there’s enough evidence against doing it, I generally don’t have proper hot baths or use steam rooms or saunas just to be on the safe side and because I don’t feel that comfortable in them. That seems like a sensible balance to me. My doctor certainly wasn’t concerned about me avoiding these things :) x

I take the same temp showers I always have I just don’t take long ones and try not to let the hot water be on my belly too much 🤷🏻‍♀️ the concern is with raising your core body temp too high, so if you keep them short you should be fine!

It won’t hurt you to take a hot shower OR BATH as long as it doesn’t raise your core temp. Just don’t stay in the shower forever and you’ll be fine
