It helps develop their skills for eating, they learn all different types of textures so hopefully they won’t be picky eaters, they learn how to move food around their mouths so that they don’t choke which is important to learn earlier then later and it means that at meal times you don’t have to spoon feed your babies and have your food go cold cause they can feed themselves.
My little one has two teeth now but when she started she had zero.  She gums everything. She sometimes doesn’t end up
Eating anything but she has fun trying and she’s so excited to eat and feed herself.  
She’s tried everything from chicken, to pasta, bread, pb, mangos, bananas, kiwi.

I’m not sure what it technically is, but once I introduced real food at 4mo, my LO started to REFUSE me. I think it was because he likes to look around while he eats. I just pump and bottle it👌🏼 he decided he was done so I guess we’re done🤷🏻‍♀️

Its allowing them to feed themselves and learn when they are full. Teaches independence and to learn all the different textures. The first few weeks they play with the food rather eat it. My little guy is 7 months and pounds and entire slice of pizza crust and all. When you spoon feed you can overfeed baby. It's nice because you just give them a little of what you eat, and you can actually eat dinner with you husband lol

From what I've gathered and from what I've been doing its more finger foods and letting them feed themselves. Instead of blending everything and making it into a puree just cut it into finger sizes. 
My son will have a bowl of banana porridge in the morning other than that he will eat broccoli, carrots, banana, toast ect. We've not long started so he hasn't had much as we've been feeding him one thing at a time for 3 days to see if there's a reaction instead of mixing things from get go in case he has a reaction and we wouldn't know which food it was from. It's messy but lots of fun!
